What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

This is a condition of the discs between the vertebrae with loss of cushioning, fragmentation and herniation related to aging. Degenerative disc disease can take place throughout the spine, but it most often occurs in the discs in the lower back (lumbar region) and the neck (cervical region). The changes in the discs can result in back or neck pain and/or:

  • Osteoarthritis, the breakdown of the tissue (cartilage) that protects and cushions joints.
  • Herniated disc, an abnormal bulge or breaking open of a spinal disc.
  • spinal stenosis, the narrowing of the spinal canal, the open space in the spine that holds the spinal cord.

What are symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease?

  • Pain in the legs, thighs, buttocks, lower back, or neck pain that worsens with standing and movement.
  • Possibly radiating weakness or numbness stemming from a Degenerated Disc in the spine.
