What is Acupuncture?

Chinese Medicine, AcupunctureAcupuncture is one of the oldest and most respected alternative medical treatments in the world. It originated in China over 5,000 years ago and has a proven history of effectiveness. Acupuncture was brought to the west in the twentieth century by doctors visiting China. They were amazed to see operations performed on fully conscious patients using acupuncture as an anaesthetic. More than eight million Americans have used acupuncture to treat a variety of common health conditions. Acupuncture treatments are holistic and preventive, treating the entire person, not just the part that hurts. To strengthen your overall health and vitality, our acupuncturist will offer suggestions for lifestyle improvements in diet, supplementation, exercise, sleep, and stress management.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites--commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Other acupoint stimulation techniques include: manual massage, moxibustion or heat therapy, cupping, and the application of topical herbal medicines and linaments.

Acupuncture is best known for its ability to successfully treat pain and its causes. In Chinese medicine, we view pain as an obstruction of qi energy and blood in meridian energy paths due to injury, muscular tension, inflammation, sprains, or pathogenic invasions of cold and damp. Acupuncture alleviates pain by raising endorphin levels and diminishing the nervous system’s sympathetic response. Also acupuncture decreases inflammation and swelling, relaxes muscles to prevent spasms, and increases energy and blood circulation to the local area.
Studies show that chronic pain stresses the body and its nervous system, consuming energy and compromising the immune system. This condition causes blood pressure to spike which can ultimately lead to heart attack or stroke. The results of acupuncture treatments are extremely relaxing and thus eliminate these negative aspects of pain in a natural way, without the usual side effects of pharmaceuticals.
The number of treatments needed varies based on the specific condition being treated and each person’s individual needs. Generally speaking, acute pain of less than one month’s duration is often resolved in a short series of treatments spaced close together. Chronic pain requires more consistent regular treatments to achieve long-term relief.
Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, stress, addictions

Acupuncture has proven effective in not only relieving symptoms, but often in resolving emotional conditions permanently. It can help ease emotional discomfort as well as the physical symptoms surrounding it such as insomnia, digestive problems, fatigue, and chronic pain. The use of Chinese herbs is a helpful tool to balance mood swings naturally, as well as relieve other symptoms. One can use herbs safely, without interfering with anxiety or depression prescription medications.
PMS, menstrual cramps and irregularities, ovulation disorders
In Chinese medicine, irregular menstruation refers to any abnormal change in the menstrual cycle and its accompanying symptoms. In this context, all of the different characteristics of the monthly flow reveal information about hormonal imbalances. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs provide a natural, safe and effective alternative to treat most menstrual irregularities, eliminating the use of birth control pills prescribed to regulate menstrual problems.
Menopause - Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, weight gain
Menopause is a normal physiological change in women that occurs when the production of estrogen diminishes, causing uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, depression, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, migraines, and weight gain. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs, along with lifestyle and diet modifications, have been used successfully for thousands of years to alleviate these symptoms.
insomnia- Inability to sleep through the night, trouble falling asleep, waking up too early
insomnia can be viewed as an inadequate and unsatisfactory quality of sleep such as frequently waking up, waking up too early, having trouble falling asleep, and experiencing an inability to sleep through the night. insomnia is often accompanied by dizziness, headaches, heart palpitations, poor memory, and mental impairment. According to Chinese medicine, all of the different patterns of sleeplessness are due to a deep, underlying imbalance. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs restore the body’s innate balance, improving the quality and duration of sleep, and increasing the time spent in the restorative dreaming state.
