There are many different treatments, and the best treatment may be different for each patient. Generally, smaller veins are injected and larger veins are either sealed closed or removed. With the smaller veins no anesthesia is required and you can go back to work the same day. With larger veins you may have localized anesthesia and most likely can go back to work the same day. Heredity is usually the reason, it can cause weak vein walls. Pregnancy, birth control pills, lack of exercise, obesity and prolonged sitting and standing can cause them as well. Also the aging process contributes.

The treatments and procedures for large varicose veins are covered by most insurance plans when non-cosmetic. So when needed due to things like pain insurance will usually approve treatment. Spider veins are considered cosmetic and are not covered.
Since everyone’s pain tolerance varies, everyone responds differently to the same treatment. Also each treatment is slightly different. Most people find most of the treatments are relatively painless or cause only a slight discomfort similar to a needle prick.
Unfortunately no, not while your pregnant. You may start to notice your veins more while pregnant because existing veins become more pronounced, but pregnancy doesn’t cause more varicose and spider veins. Elevated hormonal levels, expanding circulating blood volume, and the enlarged uterus all combine to exacerbate any existing problems with the veins. So although you may notice the your veins more while your pregnant, hold off until after you have given birth to seek treatment.
The first step in finding the right treatment for damaged veins is finding its source. A doppler Duplex Ultrasound Scan provides a visual window, revealing the diseased vein. With this diagnostic capability, we can pinpoint the exact cause of varicose veins and so customize a treatment plan for each patient.
