Arthroscopy allows doctors to diagnose and treat many joint problems utilizing a minimally invasive surgical method. In this procedure, a tiny camera, called an arthroscope, is interjected into the joint through a small incision. The video captured by the arthroscope allows the surgeon to view all of the joint structures in detail.
Arthroscopic surgery used in the diagnosis and treatment of several knee problems, including:
- Torn or damaged anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments
- Torn meniscal cartilage
- Patella (kneecap) that is out of position
- Pieces of torn cartilage that are loose in the joint
- Removal of a Baker’s cyst (a swelling behind the knee that is filled with fluid)
- Some fractures of the bones of the knee
- Swollen or damaged synovium (the lining in the joint)
Shoulder arthroscopy may be recommended to alleviate symptoms of painful shoulder problems that have developed due to an injury, overuse, or age-related degenerative changes. Some of the most common arthroscopic shoulder procedures are:
- Rotator Cuff Tears
- Labral Tears
- Bone Spurs
- AC Joint Arthritis
- Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
- Biceps Tendonitis
- Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation
Arthroscopic ankle surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat a wide range of ankle problems. It can be useful in treating various intra-articular conditions such as those caused by trauma, degenerative changes, inflammatory diseases, neoplastic disorders, and unexplained ankle symptoms.
Recovery time from an arthroscopic procedure depends on the severity of the problem and the complexity of the surgical treatment. It is essential to follow the surgeon’s recommendations for returning to daily activities and participating in a prescribed physical rehabilitation program.
At Manhattan Wellness Group, we have a pioneer of Arthroscopic Orthopedic Surgery Dr. Springer, who is the co-founder and director of the International Arthroscopy Center at the Hospital for Joint Diseases and is a clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery at New York University.
